DEPRESSION TREATMENTS
Depression is characterized as the persistent feeling of sadness or loss of interest in doing things that once brought pleasure. This can lead to a range of behavioral and physical symptoms. These may include changes in sleep, appetite, energy level, concentration, daily behavior, or self-esteem. Depression can also be associated with thoughts of suicide. First line treatment usually consists of a class of drug known as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). SSRIs may be effective at resolving depression in some patients, however about 50% of patients with depression do not find lasting relief using conventional medicine. In 2008, a study was conducted that actually found most antidepressant drugs in fact work no better than a placebo. These drugs also come with significant limitations. These limitations include low response rates, treatment resistance, high incidence of relapse, and a delay in efficacy that requires patients to take one of many SSRIs for weeks to months before seeing any benefit. Not to mention these drugs also come with many side effects such as nausea, drowsiness or insomnia, constipation, and weight gain.
PTSD IN BASELINE
PTSD stands for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. PTSD is best known for affecting veterans and first responders, but millions of others who have experienced or witnessed traumatic events may also suffer from PTSD. It affects 3.6% of the population in the U.S. PTSD that goes untreated can lead to intrusive recurring memories, avoidance, hopelessness, and detachment from family and friends. PTSD may also accompany severe depression and anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts and actions. What you are feeling is not simply the short-lived result of one of life's disappointments. Currently, the FDA has approved treatment for PTSD with some SSRIs. Patients are also treated for PTSD with "off-label" use of other medications such as benzodiazepines, mood stabilizers, and atypical antipsychotics. These medications usually do not provide lasting relief and can become addictive. Therefore, patients with PTSD often self medicate which may lead to alcoholism and drug addiction.
ANXIETY TREATMENTS IN BASELINE
Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 18.1% of the population each year. These disorders develop from a complex set of risk factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, personality, diet, and life events. Anxiety is your mind placing stress into overdrive without your conscious control. Anxiety disorders are often treated with generic antidepressants or benzodiazepines. However, 30-40% of patients treated with this drugs will not achieve remission. Anxiety is the brain's response to a myriad of different conditions and external factors perceived as a threat by your body. Everyone experiences small amounts of normal anxiety every day, however Generalized Anxiety Disorder is stress and anxiety you cannot control in the moment.
BIPOLAR DISORDER IN BASELINE
Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that can cause changes to a person's mood, daily function, and energy level. Bipolar is formerly known as manic depression. This is due to certain states of manic episodes and depressed episodes. These mood swings are usually extreme and alter the person's ability to think clearly. Manic episodes or mania may involve racing thoughts, talking excessively, delusions, insomnia, hostility, and risky behaviors. The depressed episodes are quite the opposite. Depressed episodes involve extreme sadness, feelings of worthlessness, appetite changes, lack of pleasure in doing things, and suicidal thoughts.
OCD TREATMENTS IN BASELINE
OCD is a mental health condition in which people have obsessive, and reoccurring thoughts. These thoughts are often unwanted and may come with ideas or sensations that they need to do repetitively. It is common for people to have reoccurring thoughts and behaviors, however when they start to affect your daily life and interfere with activities of daily living one may be diagnosed with OCD. People with OCD may be aware that their thoughts or actions are exaggerated, unnecessary, or false, yet they are unable to stop these compulsions. Some examples of OCD behaviors are excessive handwashing, fear of contact with a deadly virus or excessive health testing, avoidance, hoarding, or symmetry and ordering. The severity of OCD ranges, however when it impacts one's ability to function it may be time to seek intervention.
SUICIDALITY IDEATION IN BASELINE
Suicidality is the thought of taking one's life, having a plan of suicide, or having previous suicide attempts. Suicidal ideation is one of the symptoms of major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder. Suicidal ideation may also occur in people with other mental illness or no mental illness at all. There are two kinds of suicidal ideation: Active and Passive. Passive suicidal ideation is having the thoughts of suicide, but no active plan of suicide. Active suicide is when you have the thoughts and a plan. Suicidal ideation is one of the symptoms of major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder. Suicidal ideation may also occur in people with other mental illness or no mental illness at all.
CHRONIC PAIN TREATMENTS IN BASELINE
Chronic pain syndromes have a wide range of causes and are defined by the experience of daily pain for a period of over 12 weeks. Chronic pain affects between 50-100 million adults in the U.S. yearly, and over 1.5 billion people worldwide. Approximately 1 in 10 adults report they have experienced pain daily for three months or more. Chronic pain is the leading cause of long-term disability in the U.S. today.
ALCOHOL/OPIATE WITHDRAWAL ADJUNCT IN BASELINE
Ketamine is not a treatment for Alcoholism or Substance Abuse. However, Ketamine has shown to make the withdrawal of these substances a much smoother process. We require our patients to go through a detox program prior to receiving Ketamine therapy or we work with your narcotics Provider to help taper down your opiate usage. Ketamine binds to all types of Opioid receptors and is an NDMA receptor antagonist. The NMDA receptor is what is thought to modulate pain. By blocking the transmission of signals, pain is reduced. Ketamine is also a great adjunct for withdrawal for lack of respiratory suppression, rapid onset, anti-seizure activity, and ability to control acute agitation.
CRPS/RSD IN BASELINE
CRPS is a painful and often disabling neurological condition. It affects about 1.2% of the adult chronic pain population. CRPS can develop after trauma, minor injuries, or surgery. Signs and symptoms of CRPS include, but are not limited to burning pain, mechanical and thermal allodynia, hyperalgesia, hyperpathia, autonomic dysregulation, neurogenic edema and a complicated movement disorder often associated with atrophy and dystrophy known as hyperhidrosis. It is not well understood exactly what causes CRPS, but we do know it causes damage to both the Central and Peripheral Nervous Systems. The pain that follows the injury is much more intense and severe than the original injury, therefore treatment is focused on trying to manage the pain.
FIBROMYALGIA TREATMENTS IN BASELINE
Fibromyalgia is a condition that causes ongoing pain throughout the body. It's characterized by numerous tender points all over the body. Symptoms of Fibro include muscle and joint stiffness, depression, anxiety, sleep problems, fatigue, brain fog, memory issues, headaches, numbness/tingling in extremities and digestive issues. Central sensitization is thought to be the primary mechanism involved. This is where the central nervous system gets regulated into a persistent state of high reactivity which can create extreme pain even with minimal stimulus.
NEUROPATHY IN BASELINE
Neuropathy is a result of nerve damage which causes numbness and tingling, usually in the hands and feet. One of the main causes of peripheral neuropathy is Diabetes. Symptoms may include pins-and-needles sensation, numbness, pain, weakness, and other uncomfortable sensations. The Peripheral Nervous System sends signals between the Central Nervous System and the rest of the body. When these signals malfunction, it can cause loss of signals or inappropriate signaling causing the symptoms of Neuropathy.
CHEMOTHERAPY IN BASELINE
Chemotherapy is often an important part of cancer treatment. While chemotherapy may help irradicate cancer cells, it comes with it’s own long list of side effects. One of the most uncomfortable side effects is the pain that it causes. This pain may feel like burning, headaches, muscle aches, numbness and tingling, stomach pain, and shooting pains. Ketamine helps treat these neuropathic pain conditions from Chemotherapy by blocking the NMDA receptors and binding to all types of Opioid receptors. The result of Ketamine administration is a reduction in inflammation and the activity of pain producing nociceptors.
TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA IN BASELINE
Trigeminal Neuralgia is a chronic pain condition that affects the trigeminal nerve. The trigeminal nerve sends pain signals from the face to the brain. In cases of TN, the signals relay sudden, severe facial pain. The pain is often sharp and shooting feeling like an electric shock in the jaw, gums, or teeth. These pains may be triggered by something as simple as talking or chewing. TN may be a result of dental procedures, facial trauma, or a blood vessel pressing against the nerve.
LYME DISEASE TREATMENTS IN BASELINE
Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection thought to be transmitted by the bite of an infected tick. Lyme Disease may cause fatigue, chronic pain, fever, headache, heart complications, brain fog, and a bullseye rash. Along with these symptoms, patients diagnosed with Lyme Disease also develop Depression and Anxiety due to the wide range of symptoms and often extensive health regimens to follow.
MIGRAINE HEADACHES TREATMENTS IN BASELINE
Migraines are severe headaches that impact the entire nervous system. They often cause nausea, vision disturbances, light sensitivity, and other uncomfortable symptoms.
